State Sen. Lucido expects Michigan challenges for Biden, Warren

Although Fox News polling shows President Donald Trump is "vulnerable," according to an op-ed piece on the Conservative Intel website, neither Joe Biden nor Elizabeth Warren should count on the race being sewn up, said GOP state Sen. Peter Lucido, who represents Shelby Township.

"First of all, I don't believe either of them have a good chance of winning Michigan," said state Lucido (R-Lansing). "I think Trump is still pretty solid in the north end, which I represent.”

In 2016 Trump captured 47.6 percent of the Michigan vote against Democrat Hillary Clinton's 47.4 percent, which likely inspired the writers at ConservativeIntel.com to urge the president not to take a 2020 win for granted.

Although Fox shows Trump trailing the top four Democratic candidates, the op-ed writers see similarities to the previous campaign.

"Trump is always going to poll worse than he runs on Election Day," the op-ed stated. "The result in 2016 came as such a surprise precisely because Trump was polling behind, yet he won."

As for the top two Democratic candidates, Biden and Warren, who already have a couple of national debates under their belts, Lucido hedged his bets about who would capture the nomination.

"Ask me after their next debate," he said.

Meanwhile, GOP backers say Warren is trotting out the tired “you didn’t build it” socialist appeal, whereas Biden seems to be competing against himself in a gaffe war.

Lucido is betting neither tactic will endear the candidates to his constituents.

"I'm very confident Trump will come [through] again and win Michigan,” the senator predicted.
