MACOMB COUNTY: Student Robotics Teams To Display Innovations, Stem Skills At First Robotics Showcase

Robotics

Macomb County issued the following announcement on Dec. 5.

Macomb County, the Macomb Intermediate School District (MISD) and students from the International Academy of Macomb’s I.AM.Robot FIRST Robotics team will host a showcase to promote FIRST Robotics and its role in building a STEM-trained workforce for the future. The event, which will be held on Wednesday, December 11 from 3:45 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the MISD (44001 Garfield, Clinton Township), will feature more than 10 local FIRST Robotics teams* from across the county.

“We hope to get community and business leaders to come out and meet these impressive students, experience their innovations and hear why FIRST Robotics is an integral part of fueling our talent pipeline,” said Vicky Rad, director, Macomb County Planning and Economic Development. “Our ultimate goal is to foster relationships between the teams and those leaders.”

For businesses, involvement with FIRST Robotics teams presents an opportunity to educate students while gaining significant exposure in the community. These relationships will also help students learn about the workforce and develop STEM skills, as well as collaboration, communication and critical thinking abilities.

“It is estimated that 65 percent of today’s kindergarteners will have job titles that do not currently exist,” said Rad. “Many of these new roles will be related to STEM, so it is imperative that young people have opportunities to explore these fields and build connections with industry leaders.”

The December 11 showcase will open at 3:45 p.m. and the program will begin at 4 p.m. Attendees will hear from FIRST in Michigan and a panel of students and mentors. There will also be a robotics demonstration and a chance to meet one-on-one with the FIRST teams.
