Michigan is about average when it comes to the cost of divorce

Michigan was the 23rd most expensive state in the United States in the average cost of a divorce for a couple with no children. According to the website 24/7 Wall St., this type of divorce costs an average of $12,900. 

The average cost for a divorce involving children was $19,400 in Michigan in 2015, according to a study by Martindale Nolo Research.

California is the most expensive state in both categories, with averages of $17,500 for a divorce without children and $26,300 for a divorce involving children. Montana is the least expensive in both categories with averages of $8,400 and $12,600 respectively.

The average attorney fee (the majority of the cost) during a divorce nationally is $12,800, according to 24/7 Wall St.

In Michigan, divorced people made up 11.6 percent of the population in 2018, according the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as reported by The Center Square.
