MACOMB COUNTY: Health Department Expands Nurse-Family Partnership For 2020

Nurse

Macomb County issued the following announcement on Feb. 18.

The Macomb County Health Department is expanding its Nurse-Family Partnership program for 2020. The Nurse-Family Partnership is a national, evidence-based program that improves pregnancy outcomes, improves child health and developmental outcomes and promotes the economic self-sufficiency of participating families.

The Health Department plans to double the public health nursing staff from three to six in 2020. A key aspect of the Nurse-Family Partnership Program are frequent at-home visits by program nurses that are designed to empower first-time mothers by helping them become more confident through education, goal-setting, and connections to external resources to help ensure the success and stability of the family. The at-home visits by nurses start when a mom-to-be enters the program, and continue through birth until the child reaches their second birthday.

“We began the Nurse-Family Partnership in 2017, and are encouraged by the response from first-time moms and families that participate in this program and experience significant improvements in the lives of both moms and their babies,” said William Ridella, director/health officer for the Macomb County Health Department. “This approach to engaging families is recognized as the gold standard, and we’re proud to offer it to expectant women and families in Macomb County.”

The Nurse-Family Partnership program is available to first-time moms, who are less than 28 weeks pregnant, live in Macomb County and meet certain income requirements. There is no cost to participate.

The expansion of the program is made possible by a $260,000 grant from the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services.
