Representatives of St. Clair and Lapeer counties oppose Gov. Gretchen Whitmer’s COVID-19 economic reopening map that places both counties in the same region as Detroit.

“It’s ridiculous that St. Clair County – with a few hundred confirmed COVID-19 cases – would be placed in the same region as Wayne County, with several thousand COVID-19 cases,” Rep. Shane Hernandez (R-Port Huron) said in a statement, according to WNEM TV5. “The governor needs a new map.”

As reported by NBC 25 News, St. Clair and Lapeer counties were among nine counties included in the Detroit region of Michigan Economic Recovery Council’s map.

“The governor said she is going to be reliant on data as she reopens the economy – well, this is her chance to prove it,” Rep. Gary Howell (R-North Branch) told WNEM. “The COVID-19 data indicates Lapeer and Detroit are in significantly different circumstances.”

St. Clair County has had more than 300 cases of the coronavirus and Lapeer County has had more than 160 cases. This is compared to more than 8,600 cases in Detroit.

Michigan’s Stay Home, Stay Safe order was recently extended through Friday, May 15.
