St. Clair Shores has applied for a grant through the Michigan Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation Fund in order to improve lighting at Kyte Monroe Memorial Park.
Earlier this year, St. Clair Shores received grants from the same fund that were used for a skate park at the park and some other work at Brys Park. The new grant would be used to upgrade field lights that were installed in 1989 with new LED bulbs and construct a universal access playground at Kyte Monroe Memorial Park as well.
The current playground at the park is more than 20 years old. The updates would include poured-in-place safety surfacing that connects the park to the cement path on the park's north side.
“If you compare the proposed playground with the existing playground, there is no comparison,” Councilwoman Candice Rusie told the St. Clair Shoes Sentinel. “(The) different nature of some of the elements we’re proposing will really make this one stand out.”
The estimated cost for the playground is $617,400. If approved, the grant would cover $300,000 of that cost.
The field lights at Kyte Monroe Memorial Park currently have 1,000-watt light bulbs. If the grant is approved, light bulbs would be replaced with more energy-efficient, 500-watt LED bulbs. New LED lights would also be added to the four multipurpose diamonds, two hardball diamonds, two soccer fields and the diamond used for girls' fast-pitch and boys' baseball.
The lighting project cost is estimated to be at $617,400. The total cost to be covered by the grant is $300,000 if approved.
