Gov. Gretchen Whitmer may have violated her own executive orders and COVID-19 restrictions during a recent event she attended in the Traverse City area.

Michigan Capitol Confidential reported on the event at the Kresge Auditorium, which is described by its website as a “historic outdoor amphitheater,” and was chosen for an Aug. 6 memorial for former Gov. William Milliken under the auspices of meeting current health and safety restrictions on outdoor gatherings.

However, the auditorium fails to meet Whitmer’s definitions of an outdoor venue due to a roof that covers all but the very edges of the venue, with partial walls restricting air movement on the sides. The technicality highlights the complexity of meeting Michigan's coronavirus-related restrictions.

“The auditorium does not meet the definition of ‘outdoors’ specified in the governor’s executive orders, which means the Milliken event should have been limited to 10 people,” Michigan Capitol Confidential stated.

Under the order, even tents or canopies can be considered "indoors."
