If Michigan residents feel they are getting mixed signals about how to spend the upcoming months, it would be hard to blame them, as the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer appear to be out of sync.
As Whitmer encourages state residents to stay home due to COVID-19 concerns during the holidays and beyond, the MEDC is kicking off a Pure Michigan tourism campaign this winter. The campaign is expected to start this month. Pure Michigan is a taxpayer-funded program benefiting the tourism industry. The state legislature has set aside $15 million for the program this year, Michigan Capitol Confidential reported.
“We all know the next two months are going to be hard,” Whitmer said at a recent press conference, according to Michigan Capitol Confidential. “Too many people traveled for Thanksgiving, and we will see our numbers increase very likely because of it. And that’ll coincide with the next big holiday, Christmas, and too many people are considering traveling. And I’m reiterating, please don’t. About four weeks after that, we will see the impact of that.”
