Chief James Craig for Governor issued the following announcement on Mar. 7.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer called on Congress to suspend the federal gas tax, but made no mention of suspending Michigan’s gas tax,” said Chief James Craig. “As I said , if I were currently Governor, I would work toward implementing a pause on Michigan’s Gas Tax to help families in our state.”

“We have to lead by example during a crisis and that’s what I’ve done throughout my entire career. We should expect our Governor to do everything in her power to help Michigan during this energy crisis. That includes backing off her plan to shut down Line 5 and to speak out against the policies of the Biden administration that have increased costs to families.”

BREAKING NEWS – Whitmer Wants Federal Gas Tax Suspended

Gov. Gretchen WHITMER today joined five other Democratic governors today in urging Congress to pass legislation to suspend until year’s end the 18.4-cent-per gallon federal gas tax due to the rising gas prices stemming from Russia’s attacks on the Ukraine.

The federal legislation is being supported by U.S. Rep. Elissa SLOTKIN (D), U.S. Rep. Dan KILDEE (D-Flint) and U.S. Sen. Debbie STABENOW (D). It comes as the national average gas price in the United State is $4.173, up more than a dollar from 2021.

“Money saved at the pump translates into dollars back in consumers’ pockets for groceries, childcare, rent and more,” the letter reads.

It comes a day after Republican gubernatorial candidate James CRAIG urged Whitmer to pause the state’s 27-cent-a-gallon tax on gasoline. At the moment, Michigan also collects 21 cents of sales tax on a gallon on gas.

Craig told MIRS today he found the Governor’s letter “laughable” in that she could show “real leadership” by taking action on the state gas taxes as he called for the day before.

“We’re in a crisis and the sad reality is that the cost of gas is continuing to rise. I support suspending the federal tax, as well, but she can do more,” Craig said. “She should follow my leadership.”

Craig also said the Governor should back off her plan to try to shut down Line 5.
