St. Clair County Central Dispatch received reports of a single-vehicle rollover on March 23, 2023,
in the median of I94 near the Michigan Welcome Center. Deputies with the St. Clair County Sheriff’s Office
responded to the scene and located a 2009 Ford Explorer with extensive damage. A 35-year-old Fort Gratiot man
was the only occupant/driver and was unresponsive on the scene. The Port Huron Township Fire Department had
to extricate the man from the vehicle due to the extent of the damage. The male was transported to McLaren Port Huron
in critical condition.
A crash reconstructionist from the Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Team responded to the scene. A
preliminary investigation concluded that the Ford Explorer was eastbound on I94 where it left the left-hand side
of the roadway entering into the median. The vehicle then struck an embankment causing the vehicle to become airborne
Once the vehicle struck the ground it rolled over several times. Seat belts were in use and there was airbag deployment in the vehicle.
At this time intoxication is not believed to be a factor.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
