There were 1,496 students enrolled in South Lake Schools in the 2022-23 school year, 5.1% less than the previous year, according to the Michigan Department of Education.

Of all the students welcomed in the 2022-23 school year, 51.5% of them were girls, and 48.5% were boys.

Data also shows that most of the students were African American, representing 61.5% of the South Lake Schools total enrollment.

South Lake Schools covers four schools within Macomb County with its main office in St. Clair Shores. Among them, South Lake High School recorded the highest enrollment of 516 students in the 2022-23 school year.

Overall student enrollment in Michigan remains below pre-pandemic levels, white students experiencing the largest decline at 6.5%.

Academic performance has also suffered, with the state's average NAEP score dropping by 6.5 points and ethnic achievement gaps widening. Black and Hispanic students' average math proficiency dropped by 7% in 2022, to 13.5% and 28.2%, respectively.
