On Tuesday, the Michigan Secretary of State's office released additional election-training documents following a subpoena deadline issued by State Representative Jay DeBoyer. Despite this release, Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson has not provided all the materials required by DeBoyer’s subpoena.
“Jocelyn Benson’s shameless, two-faced behavior that has characterized her entire time in office is now reaching levels of absurdity I didn’t think possible,” stated DeBoyer. He criticized Benson for promoting transparency while allegedly concealing actions from the public. He further accused her of hindering access to campaign finance records and refusing to disclose election training materials legally mandated by the subpoena.
The requested materials were initially sought by House Election Integrity Committee Chair, State Representative Rachelle Smit. Both Smit and DeBoyer are former clerks who previously had access to such information before their legislative roles.
Benson has denied Smit's request and resisted DeBoyer's subpoena, citing concerns over jeopardizing sensitive information. Michigan law authorizes the Legislature to issue subpoenas on committee matters and stipulates that failure to produce requested documents may result in contempt charges.
“Benson’s disrespect towards the Legislature’s involvement in the governing process is unbecoming of any governing official, but especially one who wants to be governor,” commented DeBoyer. He asserted that Benson disregards accountability to Michigan citizens and their representatives, highlighting her defiance as an example.
