State Representative Jay DeBoyer has issued a statement in response to Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson's remarks following the Michigan House of Representatives' decision to hold her in civil contempt. The contempt charge arose from Benson's non-compliance with a subpoena issued by DeBoyer.
In his statement, Rep. DeBoyer criticized Benson's explanation for her actions, stating, "No amount of mental gymnastics will help Jocelyn Benson excuse her flagrantly illegal behavior." He emphasized that Michigan law clearly grants the Legislature the authority to issue subpoenas and hold individuals in contempt for non-compliance.
DeBoyer further expressed concern over Benson's characterization of the Legislature's efforts as "political gamesmanship," suggesting it indicates a disregard for public transparency and accountability. "Her implicit claim that any attempt to apply checks and balances to her could not possibly serve any legitimate purpose is disgusting," he stated.
The representative also addressed comments made by Benson regarding Speaker Matt Hall, Representative Smit, and himself, where she allegedly labeled them as threats to public interest. According to DeBoyer, this assertion undermines the constitutional system of government. He remarked on the seriousness of these claims: "Of the many preposterous claims Benson has made while in office, this is perhaps the most alarming and openly hostile."
DeBoyer concluded his statement by asserting that Benson's response reveals how little she values accountability mechanisms within her office.
