Councilman Ed Carter presented the Downriver Goodfellows with a Algonac Asset Award. Founded in 1952, The Goodfellows insure that every child has a Christmas and also offer additional assistance throughout the year as needed. They provide assistance to those that have fallen on hard times or have suffered a tragedy.
It was in 2010 when the Algonac Goodfellows combined forces with the Clay Township Goodfellows and became the Downriver Goodfellows, serving the both the residents of the City of Algonac and Clay Township.
Due to the COVID pandemic, the Goodfellows had to change their typical operations and developed a partnership with Woodside Bible Church and South Eastern Michigan Food Bank to provide food to those in need. Since 2020, they have been able to provide food assistance to 448 local families. This partnership has proven to be very effective and, as a result, they have continued to work together to help provide food. This year’s food distribution will take place on December 19th at the Algonac Fire Department.
They have also partnered with Anytime Fitness and Kids in Distress to strengthen their continued support of people in their time of need.
The Goodfellows, on average, provide assistance to approximately 100 local families each year during the Holidays.
They are fully funded through donations and fundraising efforts. Their main fundraiser, the annual paper sale, will take place on Saturday, December 10th.
